I did a few things today. I made visits in two hospitals. I saw a movie, Limitless, with Bradley Cooper. Elements of Fight Club, definitely a movie that I was in the mood for today. And, I did some swimming.

Multiple Choice quiz: how many lengths did I swim?

A. 90

B. 150

C. 72

If you answered All of the Above, you are correct! I went to all three lap swims today. 6:30-8:00am, 11:30am-1:30pm, and 8:30-9:30pm.

Why? To test my limits. This whole month is about endurance, with the YMCA lap challenge. I thought it would be good to pick a day and push it. I mean really push it. I had to skip the pool entirely on Wednesday for professional reasons. Thursday was a disappointing 64 lengths. So with a commitment to waking up at 5:30am, I decided March 18 would be the day.

I still swim slower than most of the regulars. I am moving at about half the speed of the ones whose swimming I admire. But from 300 yards nearly passing out on Dec 8, to today, I think I can safely say I have seen some progress.

For those of you not doing the math, that adds up to 7800 yards today. That is 7.1 km, or for red-blooded Americans, 4.43 miles.

It took me almost 4.5 hours, so my rate is about a mile an hour.

I swam farther today than I ran at SnowFest. I swam farther today than I will run at any 5k. I will probably not have another 4 mile day for a while, but I did today. One of these days I will find my limit. So far, I still don’t know what it is.

Goo goo g’joob.

  1. Great Job!!! Don’t look for your limit in the pool – push it to the limit while running (that way you just collapse on the ground and not SINK!) Great Job!!!
