“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.” – origin unclear, made famous by Mark Twain
OK, political motives notwithstanding, sometimes the numbers don’t lie.
A nice feature of my favorite website, beginnertriathlete, is the training log. I have in front of me, in a moment, all the stats on my training this week, month, and year. On one hand, I am really unhappy with December, especially coming into the Disney Halfmarathon next week. I also make the mistake of forgetting that the seasoned athletes I get so much advice from online are going to obviously post some really insane statistics, and I can’t compare to them in any reasonable way.
All that matters is growth and forward progress. That has everything to do with where I’ve been, and where I started from. So with that in mind, here are my yearly stats, with a two year comparison.
2010 – Swim – <2 miles
Bike – Zero miles
Run — 10 miles
2011 – Swim 79.75 miles
Bike 364 miles
Run 285 miles
Not bad, not bad at all.
My 2012 New Year’s Resolution is to make 2011 numbers look like 2010. And keep moving forward. Oh, and like Norm McDonald, I resolve to “not die.” That would be nice. Everything else is bonus.
Happy New Year to all friends of the Doughboy.
